Gift Candles! | Workshop Notes #1: Angeles Fir + Desert Wisdom + Fig Bake

Welcome to the L.A. Workshop—perched above an unassuming corner of Los Angeles where we intentionally muster heat, fragrance, and craft. We make these candles for people who move through their days with care: thoughtful people who care what they bring into their homes as much as what they can give back.

Every batch is poured by hand in our L.A. studio, usually in the early morning when we can hear roosters and flocks of green parrots. Wax is calculated with scientific discipline using digital scales, melted at precise temperatures with proprietary equipment, and blended with fine fragrance oils in luxury glass vessels and quickly sealed to protect each scent’s character. Before pouring, every glass is gently warmed to ensure wax adhesion and avoid fragrance migration. From the first melt to the final cure—a full twenty-one days—each candle is coaxed into form with patient attention. It sounds obsessive, but candlemaking is a practice in chemistry, physics, and olfactory artistry.

The vessels themselves reflect that same philosophy. Inspired by Murano-style Italian bubble glass, they swell with tiny suspended spheres that catch and scatter light as the flame burns down. The glow deepens, shifts, and shimmers through the textured glass, turning an ordinary burn into something quietly theatrical. To let this effect speak for itself, we use clear labeling rather than paper sleeves or transfer films often found in luxury candles. The glass is part of the story, and we preserve it at extra cost.

the Smells

Our inaugural candle collection follow the same path: grounded, growing, shaped by landscape and time.

  • Green & Woodsy: The crisp, resinous elements of cypress, fir, and moss in Angeles Fir evoke a calm, forested landscape.

  • Herbal & Earthy: Desert Wisdom carries the quiet, reflective calm of desert flora and sage, balanced with herbal florals and subtle woods.

  • Warm & Sweet: Fig Bake offers cozy, homey notes with fig, caramelized sugar, brown sugar, and amber, blending sweetness with grounding musks.

Across these candles, we aim to capture the rhythm of nature and domestic rituals, balancing freshness, warmth, and subtle complexity. Each fragrance unfolds gradually, letting top, middle, and base notes interact as the candle burns.

Each fragrance is built in ascending layers—top, middle, base—designed to unfold gradually as the candle burns, shifting in gentle arcs that fill a room without overwhelming it.

the Process

Every candle in our collection is hand-poured in our L.A. workshop in small batches with meticulous attention to detail. Wax is carefully measured and melted at precise temperatures in our special melter, then blended with luxury fragrance oils in dedicated pitchers to preserve each scent’s integrity. Vessels are prewarmed before pouring to ensure an even burn, and each candle is slow cured for 21 days to allow the fragrance to fully integrate and mature.

From the careful layering of top, middle, and base notes to the controlled cooling and finishing of each jar, every step reflects a balance of craft and care developed from years of craft candlemaking. The result is a candle that not only fills your space with rich, even fragrance but also embodies the art of small-batch, sustainable handcrafting.

We donate 7% of our profits to nonprofits working in the very neighborhoods our products move through—supporting gang-intervention and re-entry programs, feeding and equipping families in need, and providing direct care to unhoused Angelenos.

the R&D

Behind the scenes, the lab keeps pushing forward. We are testing natural additives such as beeswax to improve performance in larger formats and refining new seasonal concepts, including a fresh grassy blend called Gourd News. You should also check out our soft cotton tees and hoodies with candle inspired designs. A way to wear the world our candles evoke, on trails or in the everyday.

Seven percent of profits are donated to charities serving the poor and unhoused, especially in Los Angeles. Your candle becomes part of that work—quietly illuminating more than the room it sits in. “Always have God before your eyes”, as St. Anthony the Great said [The Sayings of the Desert Fathers (1975)].

And this is only the start. Look out for the Easter/Pascha wave of fragrances—Gourd News, Salted Orchid, and Lavandula Mandorla—inspired by forest canopies, desert contours, and the places set aside for fragrances to be born.

  • Meter shows CO2 (PPM), relative humidity (%RH), temperature (in Fahrenheit) and test took place in corner of large room under normal living conditions.
  • Both test candles burned for over 44 hours, small differences between the candles in this test are probably due to wick drift from the center.
  • Candles were not observed to affect PPM, confirming this wax blend is exceptionally clean burning, although they did warm the area modestly.
  • Note that practically all the wax was used, leaving the glass relatively clean.
  • The flame lights the bubbles in the glass in a unique way for each candle.
